I am a seventeen-year-old girl. In January, I'll be eighteen. I believe that while it's true that as people get older, their tastes change, continuing to like things that you liked as a child (or in this case, things that were around when you were a child) doesn't reflect on your maturity. You like what you like, and there's no shame in that.
What's brought this on, you might ask? Well, I mentioned to my mother that I was thinking about dressing up as Rita Repulsa for Halloween, provided I could get a costume on such short notice. Once I told her Rita was a villainess from Power Rangers, she... didn't take it well. After threatening to both block my TV and tell my dad (I really wish I was kidding about that), she proceeded to mock me for liking something that's "for children".
This isn't the first time either. She seems to take great delight in telling me how pathetic it is that I like to spend my time on the Internet reading fanfiction, watching YouTube videos of cartoons, and role playing, even going so far as to say I have no life. Which is twice as insensitive considering what I thought about doing in the past and the fact that it was caused by a lack of confidence.
And she seriously doesn't understand why I prefer the Internet over talking to her.
I used to get teased by my sisters for liking Disney movies and power rangers saying they're for kids. But I eventually just learned to tune them out and they don't tease me anymore about it.
At first from what I read it sounded like teasing but if she really enjoys mocking you that's going a bit too far. I'd probably have told her to mind her own business. I have friends who are in their 30's and 40's and have children of their own who are roleplaying with me on another site. I agree with you that age has nothing to do with liking something. I still like the muppet films, disney films, power rangers, and tons of cartoons i used to watch growing up.

Mal, I'm sorry you deal with that. Your mother just doesn't understand and probably never will. You're never too old for shows like Disney and power rangers. If you want an example, my younger brother makes fun of me for enjoying the avengers, saying it's for boys and not for some girl like me and says I only like it because of Robert Downey Jr. Which is SOME of the case but not entirely... In fact RDJ being in there is simply a extra bonus. I loved Iron Man, Thor and Captain America well simply because I can, it's a free country. Also, my mom sometime ago made fun of me for liking Winnie The pooh and watching all the movies but I talked to her about that and how it hurt my feelings and she apoligized, honestly having no idea it offended me and promised to leave me to enjoy it
As for roleplaying, your mom's missing out. I'm a year younger than you are and my family sees me doing this and tell me as long as I get schoolwork done, they don't really give a damn.
