Why did you pick him/her?: For mai and to romance with her. Plus I was thinking I'd try a shot at joey.

Personality:
Joey can be a bit overly cynical, tough and aggressive sometimes but he has a compassionate, noble and sensitive soul underneath all of this. He used to be selfish and mean, but thanks to becoming friends with others such as yugi he has changed his ways immensely. He's still brash, blunt and a bit passive aggressive but he now is relatively pleasant, friendly and kind. He's fun-loving, energetic, passionate and adventurous. He's a bit of a egotist but will become a good sport as he now prefers to have fun as opposed to just win. He's extremely protective of those he cares about and will risk his life many times for them. He's loyal and immensely determined, going out of his way to help most of the time. He can be impulsive but is relatively well meaning. He's also quite brave, heroic to others when needed.
History:
Joey was born the eldest next to his little sister Serenity, his parents divorced when he was ten and he was raised by his father mostly. He managed to get some time here and there with his sister, despite the divorce situation, and was really close with her. His mother, however, he resented and wouldn't speak to her until many years later. He became a bully at school due to being frustrated with his father being a gambler and befriended another kid named Tristan. The two became a team and started bullying to handle their problems at home. He then confronted a new kid named Yugi, even stealing from him to make himself feel better. However when he and Tristan got bullied, yugi stood up for them. Since then joey has atoned for his actions and became best friends with yugi. He learned a lot from yugi's kindness and learned to forgive his mother, becoming good friends with her and getting to spend more time with serenity. She had to do a operation for her eyesight and joey would use whatever time he had to support her.
Also, in the meantime, he handled many adventures and situations with Yugi along with yugi's friend group which of course included Tristan. After Seto Kaiba wins against Solomon Muto, Yugi's grandfather, and then rips up his "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" card, Joey spurs a bitter hatred of Kaiba. After taking up Duel Monsters, it becomes clear that Joey isn't very good at the game initially so Yugi suggests that Joey take lessons from Solomon. The training proves rigorous, yet Joey copes and becomes a stronger Duelist. He makes the top eight in the regional tournament. Because of his success, Joey accompanies Yugi in the Duelist Kingdom tournament, to help Yugi rescue Solomon and so he can use the prize money. This was so he could pay for Serenity's eye operation. Yugi gives Joey one of his Star Chips allowing Joey to also enter the tournament. On the boat journey to the Duelist Kingdom, Yugi gives Joey a "Time Wizard" saying it can be useful in a tight situation. He met a competitor named Mai Valentine and bantered with her, despite their rivalry joey was interested in her. After Weevil tossed Yugi's cards overboard, Joey dives in to the water to rescue them, he manages to retrieve two of the cards, before Yugi dives in to rescue Joey. Both of them are saved by Téa and Tristan, who managed to sneak onto the boat. Once safely back on board, Joey tells his friends of his sister and her condition. Despite being an amateur, Joey manages to beat Mai Valentine with Yugi's help and support from Téa and Tristan. He later beats Rex Raptor in a Duel, despite not being allowed to accept help from Yugi.
He loses confidence in himself and his victories however when Seto Kaiba managed to defeat him. He was forced into another duel by another competitor though and won, regaining his confidence. He didn't make it to the finals though, but he supported Yugi who did and received the prize money Yugi won to assist his sister's operation. Shortly after he was forced to assist yugi in saving seto kaiba from a virtual world and met up with mai valentine who helped them, admitting she viewed them as friends. Joey viewed her as something more but didn't push his buttons knowing her strong personality. Unfortunately she got trapped and joey, along with yugi and the group, tried to save her. She was returned but brought back to the shadow realm thanks to marik. But she eventually returned for good thanks to assistance from marik's older sister, who told them of marik's plight of being controlled by a dark side. He also had to be confronted by many foes, and had to be confronted for failing to be on time for serenity's operation but he made up for it in full. Including returning to the real world, handling many duels and succeeding in some and failing in others. On entering the Duel Tower Island, where the Battle City finals are taking place, Kaiba continues to mock Joey and asked how he managed to enter the tournament, saying somebody must have messed up on the computer systems. Despite his hatred for Kaiba, Joey hated Marik more and used the Battle Royale Duel, which would determine who faced who in the next round in his favor to pair him against Marik. hen Joey Duels Marik in the semi-finals, Marik links all monsters Summoned by a player to the player themselves, so that any pain the monster feels, the controller would also feel. Joey Duels surprisingly well against Marik, but when Marik Summons "The Winged Dragon of Ra", he uses its effect to destroy Joey's monsters, causing Joey immense pain. It appeared that Joey would not survive the blast. This even resulted in Yami begging Kaiba to call off the Duel, but Kaiba refuses, and insisted he had to witness Ra's special ability with his own eyes. But when Ra had finished, Joey was still standing. He summoned it and tried to attack Marik's Life Points directly for the win, but collapsed before the attack went through, leaving Marik the winner. Despite losing, he gained the respect of others, including kaiba but was in a coma for a few weeks because of the attack. He awoke afterwards though and returned to the competition, mainly to support others.
Joey then had to assist Yugi with Dartz and his cult, even being forced to witness Mai turn against him thanks to her reputation being ruined and the magic of Dartz's forces. He eventually got through to her, allowing his soul to be taken as he realized he cared too much about mai. He was eventually set free and assisted Yugi in defeating Dartz for good. Things then presumed normally. One day though mai disappeared again and joey went to search for her, only for he himself to be found in a new place. Thankfully he has all his cards in tact and his duel disk. He also found mai, he only agreed to stay in the critic army for her but could sense she was discontent. Which is fine by him. His loyalty is only to her, not the army.
