Why did you pick him/her?: Because John needs motivation to stay and overall needs someone who truly has his back.

Personality: Mary is overall quite sweet, she also tends to be quite intelligent despite her quiet reserve. She's softspoken but is by no means a pushover, she does have limits which will be shown when angered. She tends to be a bit reserved and disciplined, hence her no nonsense part of her personality but she does mean well and is quite understanding. She's compassionate, friendly and quite pleasant to be around. She's loyal and can stand up for herself if the situation demands it. She's determined, brave and can be quite fiesty when confronted. She is also someone who is extremely honest, even wearing her heart on her sleeve sometimes. Because of this she CAN leave a grudge, especially when she is personally attacked.
History:
Mary Morstan lived around london most of her life, eventually becoming a governess who was well-liked by her bosses. She did have a engagement to a man prior to meeting John Watson but he unfortunately passed away due to illness. She felt rather unhappy and focused on work until she met John Watson, who befriended her then shortly after romanced her. Feeling fearful he would leave her, she told him of her previous engagement to prevent him from feeling lied to. John accepted her fully and even insisted that he loved her no matter what the circumstances. Not long after being honest with him, he began acting more loving than usual and Mary was suspicious but didn't want to say anything. She eventually met a good friend of his named Sherlock who seemed nice to her at first, but then became confrontational after 'reading' her, accusing her of being a gold digger and a manipulative woman. Hurt, she threw wine at him and left the restaurant and did her best to avoid sherlock. However John managed to convince her to forgive holmes and soon she did, but she still had a minor grudge against him. John eventually proposed to her, which she accepted and the two proceeded to get married. Sherlock though saved her and watson from a assassin attempt on their honeymoon train which lead her to meet Mycroft(Holmes' older brother).
Despite mycroft's personality, mary finally saw why sherlock was the way he was and finally accepted him. Unfortunately it came a bit late as sherlock was said to be dead. Not long after her husband disappeared, then soon she found herself meeting the man that nearly killed her AND her husband. The man was calm and tried to reason with her about her husband being needed for a war. And that she was here to help him. Mary didn't really believe that she was here just for moral support but she was not going to let her husband go in this alone. So she agreed to stay. Unbeknownst to mary, she is the bargaining tool to make sure watson will stay in the facilier army.
