He had a normal childhood being spoiled by his father and trained to be a knight. After Arthur's parents died his father took Arthur rin as a foster son. His father was worried he'd get into trouble if Wart never returned. But he came back with Merlin. Ector is pleased with this thinking Kay could become the next king and Kay is happy to hear about that as well. He ws sure he'd win anyway but becoming a king would be a much better prize. Kay doesn't want Wart as his squire but reluctantly agrees to his father's wishes. He later is seen training and is not as good as he claims to be.

They decide not to kick Merlin out fear he might curse them but because of Arthur trying to defend Merlin Ector tells him he will no longer be Kay's squire. This pleases Kay who taunts Arthur about it who leaves angry and upset.
Several months later Kay has improved enough with help of his new Squire Hobbs and leaves to compete in the tournmanent. Hobbs, Arthur, Ecdtor and Pelinore go with him to the tournament. Kay learns Arthur left his sword at the inn and threatens to hurt Arthur. Arthur goes back for it but the inn is closed. He finds a sword in a frosted stone not knowing what it is. He pulls it out so Kay can have a Sword at the tournament. He tries to give it to Kay but everyone realizes what it was. Arthur returns it to the stone as many people including Kay try to pull it out but fail. Arthur pulls it out again as everyone bows to Arthur including Ector and Kay as Arthur is pronounced king.
But one day Arthur disappears and news of the witch Madame Mim disappearing as well makes people wonder if the witch kidnapped the young king. Kay reluctantly goes out to search for his foster brother and disappears himself. He ends up in another world finding Arthur in Ask That Guy's army. Now being in a war he's determined to prove himself but also protective of Arthur. He is his brother and responsibility. They didn't always get along but Arthur was still his family. He wasn't going to let anyone else hurt him.
