Wow, I haven't written any fics in a while. I'm sure that I'll be adding more fics over here, but for now I've just got this one.
Secret Admirer
Grimacing at the friendly search browser inviting her to type in whatever she wanted, Tara stared at the blinking cursor as if it were begging her to search for something. She knew exactly what she was going to search, and that's why she was hesitant to even touch the laptop that sat on her lap. So there she was, sitting on the couch, wishing she would just go to bed instead of using a computer. She took a peek at what time it was, figuring it was pretty late and everyone was asleep by then.
Three o'clock in the morning. Yep, there certainly was a good chance that everyone else was asleep by now.
Her eyes glanced this way and that to ensure she was the only one in the room. With a deep breath, her fingers jumbled across the keyboard. She recoiled at the sight of the mess of words that she typed out, but she couldn't care enough to fix them into what she really meant. Hopefully, the search engine would figure out what she meant. Her fingers glided down to the enter button, and there was one sentence just below the search bar that she had to click on.
Did you mean tips for dating
Quickly, she clicked on the link to correct the search. Her eyebrows lowered and scrunched while her eyes squinted at the text. There was an alarming amount of choices to pick from. With a shrug, she clicked on a link to see where it would take her. In return, the site had next to no valuable information. With a groan, she went back and attempted to look at another site for better luck. Well, this time it actually had some advice on how to attract a partner, so that was a good start. The giant hearts plastered everywhere on the page were a bit distracting though.
"Ooh, looks like Tara's got the hots for someone."
Tara froze in place, eyes widening in surprise at the sound of a familiar voice. Her heart raced at that sentence. Her face turned a dark shade of red as she turned to face the person who spoke. Dean.
"Huh, who, me? Nah, my friend asked me to look up some dating sites to get some tips on how to hook up with someone or something like that," Tara responded, adrenaline forcing her words to move faster. She didn't even bother to question why he was up at three in the morning, all of her thoughts just rushed through her head uncontrollably. "I mean, I don't know why anyone would even want to be hooking up right now, seeing as how this is war and all, but I do what I can to help out a friend in need, you feel me?"
"Uh-huh." The man stood behind the couch, scanning over what was on Tara's monitor. Emerald eyes flickered over to the girl behind the laptop within seconds. "And who's that friend?"
"That would be, uh, your brother."
A brow was raised at Sullivan's response. "Oh really? Because Sammy's pretty private about what he looks up on his computer. I didn't know you two were so close he'd be willing to let you look up dating advice for him, let alone just give him advice."
The female cleared her throat, lifting up one shoulder in a casual shrug. "Well, you know, maybe he didn't want to look it up himself or else he'd get stuck with his older brother looking into his love life." The male crossed his arms against his chest, a smirk making it's way across his lips.
"Oh, is that so? Then why did you act so nervous when I walked in here? I mean, you're just looking up this kind of thing for Sam, aren't you?"
The Bostonian bit her lip and chewed at it anxiously. You're going to look so damn stupid for opening your mouth, she chastised herself mentally. "Ok, ok, it's not for Sam. It's for me."
"See, you can't lie to me. I'm a professional at lying. So, who is it you've got your eye on?" Tara stayed quiet that time. Oh, no, she couldn't tell him. She could absolutely not tell him. So many things could go wrong if she told him. How would she even tell him? What would he say if he figured out that it was him she was trying to impress? Rejection, fear, and anxiety all flowed through her veins.
Finally, she gulped and gave an answer. "That's for me to know and for you to never find out. Ever." Her hands were shaky, as was her voice. Nope, she was not going to tell him. She stared back at the monitor, doing her best to avoid looking at Dean.
"What is with chicks and keeping their crushes a secret? Isn't that kinda for middle schoolers?" Dean's first two questions spilled from his mouth with an obviously teasing tone, and he didn't expect to get an answer for either. His next one, however, he did expect an answer from Tara. "Are you scared that I'm gonna tell everyone?"
"I might be, I don't know. I don't want that kind of thing spreading around. It's hard enough that I can't just walk up and ask if we could go out for a burger or something. I don't know, would he even talk to me after I told him?"
"Are you kidding me? Have you not had a boyfriend before?"
The femme was hesitant before answering. "No. I've just, well, I don't know. I guess I never really met anyone who caught my eye. Then I meet someone here, but now that I'm thinking about it, we probably wouldn't work out. We come from two different worlds." She paused and glanced over at Dean. "Literally, we're from two different worlds. It would never work out. He's probably got someone back home, and I don't stand a chance. I mean, look at me, I'm looking up dating tips to figure out how to talk to him. I don't know what drove me to believe I could ever have a chance to be with him." She shook her head slightly, as if she were dismissing the idea of being in a relationship.
"You don't know that it won't work out. Let's say you do get with this guy, and maybe it does work out, or maybe it doesn't. Either way, it would be a whole lot better to know what would happen instead of sitting around, wishing you took the chance when it's too late. You've just gotta gamble sometimes. I gamble all the time, and I've made it out ok, haven't I?"
The young woman couldn't come up with a response for the longest time, struggling with her own inner conflict. She stared at the monitor, almost as if there was no life inside her aquatic discs. She exhaled a large breath before speaking at last. "You know, I think I will tell him how I feel about him. Then I can say that I had the guts to say something."
"Exactly. So, who is 'him' again?"
A smile crawled onto Tara's face. An admittedly somewhat sad smile, but a smile nonetheless. A light chortle spilled out of her mouth, her gaze focused on the ground. It took but a moment for her aquatic gaze to return to Dean.
"I'll tell you who all about him someday, alright?"
