Quote: “I am Lord Zedd, emperor of all I see!”
Name: Lord Zedd
Age: over 10,000 years old
Where is this character from?: Power Rangers, specifically Mighty Morphin through In Space
Why did you pick him/her?: I’ve known about him for less than a year, but he’s already one of my favorite villains, and I love his relationship with Rita. What can I say; I’m a sucker for villains in love.
Picture:
Personality: A power-hungry warlord who rules over his empire with an iron fist. Lord Zedd is ruthless, holding little tolerance for idiocy and showing no remorse for anything he does (until it backfires). Failure is something Zedd doesn’t tolerate either, as Rita once found out. He’s incapable of accepting blame, sometimes going so far as to deny involvement in an entire scheme if it fails. On the other hand, if a scheme is successful, he’ll be the first to take all the credit, regardless of whose idea it really was.
In stark contrast to all of this, Zedd genuinely loves his wife and at times will go out of his way to please her.
History: Lord Zedd’s forces had conquered a string of planets when he turned his attention to Earth. Not wanting to get his own hands dirty dealing with the little mud ball, he sent one of his minions, Rita Repulsa, to take it over while he went to conquer other, larger planets. Cut to ten thousand years later, with Rita having been freed from her imprisonment in the space dumpster and squaring off against a team of Power Rangers. Furious that she was being beaten by “mere infants”, Zedd stripped Rita of her powers, shrunk her down, and stuck her in a miniature dumpster, banishing her forevermore. From there, he took over attempts at conquering Earth… and promptly found out why Rita had been having so much difficulty. Far from the children he had branded them as, the Rangers soon proved to be capable fighters, and no matter what Zedd threw at them, they always managed to come back stronger.
It was around this time that Zedd entered his centennial sleep to recharge his evil energies, inadvertently leaving himself vulnerable to an attack very different from the ones he usually launched. While he slept, Rita returned and in a bid for power, slipped him a love potion. Upon waking, Zedd was immediately infatuated with Rita, marrying her the same day (the love potion was later removed from the equation, though to everyone’s surprise, Zedd loved Rita anyway). Their combined forces proved to be more formidable, and often it was only narrowly that the Rangers escaped defeat. During this period, Rita’s brother Rito Revolto and father Master Vile would appear on the scene, attempting to rid them of the Rangers. Zedd not-so-secretly hated both of his in-laws, particularly Vile, who he viewed as a pretender to his throne.
This would prove unfortunate, as when the Machine Empire’s attacks forced Zedd, Rita, and company off their lunar base, it was with Master Vile that they sought refuge with. This coupled with the humiliation of being forced to abandon his home made Zedd determined to reclaim the moon. A few weeks after being chased away, Zedd and Rita returned in an old RV and began plotting the downfall of the Machine Empire. After a succession of spectacular failures (mostly caused by their minions’ bumbling), they were able to blow up the Royal House of Gadgetry with a bomb disguised as a present. They celebrated by finally going on a proper honeymoon.
When the evil couple returned, they found themselves summoned by Dark Specter, the Grand Monarch of Evil, to attend a meeting of villains. There Dark Specter revealed that he had captured Zordon, at which point the Red Astro Ranger was revealed to have infiltrated the meeting, escaping before he could be eliminated. Rather than having Rita go after Andros as Zedd had hoped (thus putting the two of them back on the map to destroying the Rangers), the task was given to Astronema, and he and Rita were sent back to their lunar base. Zedd fumed over their brush-off, not knowing that the worst had yet to come.
An ordinary day was turned upside down when a dimensional portal appeared without warning in the lunar palace. Try though he did, Zedd was unable to stop its effects, and Rita was sucked in. Stricken, Zedd ordered Finster to find out where the portal led in the hopes of getting her back. The doglike scientist did more than that – in a month’s time, he was able to create a machine that would recreate the portal’s effects. Finster cautioned them that the device was still experimental, but Zedd wouldn’t heed the warnings and ordered that it be used. He went into the portal it created, at which point the side effects kicked in.
It was as though a reset button had been hit somewhere in his exposed brain. Everything following his awakening from his centennial sleep was erased. Were it not for his sleep, his memories might have been lost completely. No longer recalling his purpose for coming to Chicago, Zedd is destined to join the secret war – unknowingly, the same side as his wife.
Allies: Rita, his underlings, members of the army
Enemies: Power Rangers, members of other armies, Rita (it’s complicated), anyone allied with the forces of good
Plans: Tonot screw him up have him get his memories back, remember his love for Rita, and generally be awesome
